Robbie Cruise -

This week, I spoke with Robbie Cruise. Robbie owns a popular night club here in Astoria. Robbie has some very interesting ideas to promote and grow his business, and we spoke about them and the difficulties a small business owner faces in this modern technological world.

Player’s Theater TONIGHT (5/11) at 10 and SATURDAY (5/12) at 10

One last final push for these two shows -

Fun Fun Fun and High Five Fest host SKOMP tonight at 10pm at Player’s Theater. It’s got improv, sketch, and more improv. Also, a raffle, where you can win such great prizes as A WALK ON ROLE IN A SKETCH and A SLOT AS A TEAM CAPTAIN AS KALEIDESCOPE.

The sketches this month are super funny, and I hope I don’t ruin them with bad acting. I was laughing my way through the entire rehearsal. This show gets my STAMP OF APPROVAL!

Tomorrow night is the debut show of THE SATURDAY NIGHT SUMMIT, presented by the sleepy underdogs of (Secret Man Group). This is the show to see if you want to see, in musician/comedian/luminary Josh Sharp’s words, “next level shit”. And you do! STAMP OF APPROVAL.

One again,

SKOMP - 5/11 (TONIGHT) - 10pm, Player’s Theater
THE SATURDAY NIGHT SUMMIT - 5/12 (SATURDAY) - 10pm, Player’s Theater

(Premature) thanks again for coming out!

RATLIFF/HANKIN 2012

In a candid moment, a documentary crew captures Presidential candidate Connor Ratliff (Age 36) practicing a possible acceptance speech. (NSFW)

I would gladly watch a whole documentary of this. I am BEGGING for a whole documentary of this. I would donate to a KICKSTARTER for a whole documentary of this.

Built To Spill - Strange

The lyrics remind me of improv, and how I feel about improv, and what I think about when I am improvising.

this strange sound you said I said

you’re not listening or I’m not saying it right

this strange war of promises

let’s call this a truce, well call it the truth

and it’s strange, but not all that strange

yeah it’s strange, but what’s so strange about that?

yeah it’s strange, but what isn’t strange?

yeah it’s strange, but oh well

On Fun Fun Fun and (Secret Man Group) and Why You Should Go To Our Shows

Fun Fun Fun is a complete blast to play with. I’ve never meshed so quickly and seamlessly with a team before. We instantly started playing with each other and became best friends, and that really translates in the work on stage. We play hard, fast, loose, and completely unapologetically. I think our shows are exciting, physical, and delightful, and you can hold our work up to the best of them.

We have been co-hosting SKOMP, our monthly show at Player’s Theater, for the past two months, and our next show is Friday the 11th at 10pm. Who co-hosts, you ask? Why my sketch team, High Five Fest!

High Five Fest came about because we all wanted to write good sketches and put them up on stage. No more bullshit, no more fucking around. Just good sketches on their feet, in front of an audience. So far, we’ve done top level work. I’d put any of our sketches against any of your favorite sketch shows going today.

So please come to our show, Friday the 11th at 10pm at Player’s Theater. If this is a fun, well-attended show, that could lead to another fun, well-attended show that your team could perform on. Plus, we’re DOING OUR OWN THING. We’re not waiting for someone to hand us an opportunity. We’re Black Flagging it. We’re working outside the system and doing the work we want to do, no compromises, no pleasing anybody but ourselves, no bullshit. And these shows have always been great, always been a good time, always been worth your 4.99.

**

(Secret Man Group) has been around for two and a half years. I think this means we are one of the longer running indie teams, and certainly one of the few teams that’s been together this long that still rehearses every week. And now, one Under St. Mark’s run, four former members, coming up on our third DCM, and one Stepfather later, we have a new monthly show at Player’s Theater.

But this is not just any improv show. We’ve put an insane amount of work into making this show unlike every other improv show. The Saturday Night Summit will have (SMG) do an opening, then two teams will do their sets, then (SMG) will do our set, and then all three teams will do callbacks and connections to the entire set. Also, each team will be organically and seamlessly transitioning between sets. Also, Josh Sharp and Ben Warheit will be musical accompaniment to the entire show. Basically, it’s almost like a show-wide Harold, where all the sets add up to a larger whole, and everyone lives in the same world.

The ambition, scope, and scale of this thing really impresses me, and I’m so proud I am a part of a team that’s willing to try it, willing to make it work, and willing to keep going if it fails. Please come to our first show, this Saturday the 12th and 10pm at Player’s Theater. Please support us - we’re doing something really unique and trying to push the art form forward. I hope that didn’t come off pretentious, but we really are doing something different. Supporting this show is supporting a really good team that is trying their damnedest to do the best show they can. And trust me, this show is going to melt minds.

**

Overall, let’s all make it a point to see these shows and SUPPORT INDEPENDENT IMPROV AND SKETCH. This is such a great community that I am so thankful to be a part of, and we’re all so busy doing our own thing, it’s hard to find time to support someone else’s thing. I’m guilty of this as much as anyone. So let’s start the middle of the New Year off right and support each other. Come out to other people’s shows. Spend money on each other’s projects. Make a community that can exist and thrive on its own. The UCB Theater that we all love so much was once a tiny little thing that built up steam from the quality of the work and the support of the community. The best note I ever got was from Curtis Gwinn in 401 where he told us the thing you make yourself will always be more satisfying than the thing you’re put on. Careers are made off of the thing you make yourself. And those things he was talking about? One of them was DEATH BY ROO ROO. I’m not saying we’re Roo Roo, but I am saying we’re following in the footsteps of giants, and we’re doing pretty fucking good, and we’re gonna take our slice of the pie and earn every inch. Let’s do this thing together and SUPPORT INDEPENDENT IMPROV AND SKETCH.

I had to have talked about this song before. But no other song makes me so consistently happy every time I hear it.

joestanton asked: What do you honestly think of me? What do you honestly think of meeve?

Joe, you’re a real good guy. Low stress, low drama. Thoughtful and you care about improv, so it’s easy to work with you. I really liked your work in that Sublet video you did, and it made me realize you are a good actor, probably better than you think?
